And The Sky Opened
And The Sky Opened
Acrylic on Canvas - 130 x 100 cm
This painting captures a ritual both personal and cosmic: two youths lie side by side, hands gently clasped, as if awaiting something immense—the end of the world or the beginning of one. The work’s four-panel structure fragments space and time, moving from cave to moon to rooftop gathering, yet all paths converge in the lower image, where intimacy becomes ceremony. The figures' stillness, beneath a sky drenched in celestial light, evokes a rite of passage—private, tender, and quietly transcendent. It’s not a narrative, but a moment suspended, suggesting that youth itself is a ritual: of waiting, of becoming, of being together in uncertainty.
This cosmic atmosphere echoes the emotional scale of Melancholia, where the apocalypse becomes a stage for love, fear, and revelation. It also draws on Waking Life's fluid transitions between dream and reflection, where each encounter feels like a philosophical ritual. Here, the act of holding hands under an unraveling sky becomes a sacred gesture—a silent liturgy of presence, vulnerability, and shared awe.
Philosopher Gaston Bachelard, in The Poetics of Space, speaks of how intimate spaces shape the imagination. This scene reflects that idea: a stretch of ground becomes an altar, the sky a dome of infinite meaning. These youths perform a quiet ritual of connection, echoing ancient human rhythms—life, death, closeness, separation—replayed not in temples, but in fields, rooftops, and each other’s company.
The Artist
The Artist
Dan’s rich, layered paintings dance between abstraction and representation - abundant with plant life, architectural elements and experimental, abstracted mark-making. A Portsmouth based artist, Dan’s works have a strong cinematic aesthetic - worlds which feel both familiar and unfamiliar are carefully built. Each work is a vibrant tapestry where the manner in which the paint is applied is just as important as the intriguing subject manner and mysterious narrative.
