The Huguenot's House
The Huguenot's House
Original oil on canvas, framed in a floating white wood tray frame measuring 44 x 54 cm.
A Georgian Silkweaver’s house stands alone - lifted from it’s home in Spitalfields, East London and adorned with a design by Anna Maria Garthwaite. Moving to London in 1728, unmarried, in her forties and with no experience, Anna began a bold career in the male-dominated industry of silk design. Working alongside many French Huguenot weavers who had fled persecution in France, she established herself as the most famous female practitioner of the craft. Her designs became known worldwide and are the only surviving designs by a female artist from this era.
The house remains mostly unchanged by time, and Chris has honoured the architectural details - vanishing the neighbours and transporting it to a quiet landscape.
The Artist
The Artist
Looking closely at light and shadow, Chris blends painterly realism with intriguing narrative. He pays attention to the everyday, the half-noticed and the overlooked. From an isolated building next to a canal to an unremarkable row of houses - Chris collects imagery which has sparked his imagination and transforms it. By placing these single houses into unexpected rural spaces he changes the context and thus creates a new narrative - steeped in otherness, nostalgic beauty and a hint of the surreal. A black and white cat traces his every step.
