Oil on Canvas, framed in a solid oak floating tray frame measuring 53 x 53 cm.
This painting was inspired by the semi final of Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year 2025, which was held in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Whilst this is not the painting he completed in 4 hours for the competition, he loved the area so much that he created a 2nd painting after filming.
The Artist
The Artist
Born in 1979 in Surrey, Benjamin is a London-based self-taught artist and exciting new voice in contemporary landscape painting. As the 2025 Winner of Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year he has been attracting global attention with his unique visual language and playful approach to representation.
Using a mark-making style which is textural and abstracted, Benjamin embraces translucency and the visible brushstroke, calling our attention to the materiality of paint on surface. Often merging the real and the imagined, he reacts to the natural world instinctually and enjoys spaces which allow for touches of the surreal. Anchored by close observation of light and form, dreamlike botanical-filled landscapes emerge from strokes of oil paint that seem to shimmer with energy: fizzing and effervescent.
