Remnants of Utopia II
Remnants of Utopia II
Original painting on concrete - created using mixed media including spray paint. This artwork measures 10 x 10 cm and is 3 cm deep. Ready to hang with fixtures attached to the back.
This painting is part of a series of work documenting the Aylesbury estate in Walworth, which is currently under going demolition.
Ritual is a key component of Mandy's practice as she continually returns to familiar estates, buildings and areas to document their transience over the years. The process of visiting these urban spaces is a grounding observational practice which informs her painting process - as she then carefully depicts corners of these estates. Repetitively preparing and painting upon concrete, she leans into the materials she finds in these spaces.
The Artist
The Artist
Mandy’s immaculately painted artworks pay close attention to the urban landscape, focusing on Brutalist architecture to explore issues like gentrification and social class. She refuses to overlook the mundane and instead enjoys documenting housing estates in transition - parts of which are continually lost alongside the displacement of their inhabitants.
She works with materials that have a connection to the sites depicted - building a unique and contrasting visual language which utilises the materiality of concrete and spray paint.
Framing
Framing
This artwork is painted on thick concrete with hanging fixtures on the back - it does not require framing.
