The Musician's House
The Musician's House
Original oil on canvas, framed in a floating white wood tray frame measuring 44 x 54 cm.
When strolling past this house we imagine that passersby might stop and take a moment on the wooden bench. Guided to contemplation, a gentle lullaby playing from above.
Here Chris was inspired by Italian artist Rosso Fiorentino’s 1521 painting ‘Angel Playing the Lute’. The painting was itself a modern reinterpretation of a traditional theme, and Chris has once more re-imagined it for a contemporary audience. Interestingly, under the layers of black on Fiorentino’s painting, the fragment of a building was discovered, revealing the work as part of a lost altarpiece.
The Artist
The Artist
Looking closely at light and shadow, Chris blends painterly realism with intriguing narrative. He pays attention to the everyday, the half-noticed and the overlooked. From an isolated building next to a canal to an unremarkable row of houses - Chris collects imagery which has sparked his imagination and transforms it. By placing these single houses into unexpected rural spaces he changes the context and thus creates a new narrative - steeped in otherness, nostalgic beauty and a hint of the surreal. A black and white cat traces his every step.
